The S2000 will disappear just as easily as a Civic.

Fresno has the highest theft rate in the country. Your odds of anything you buy is most likely to get stolen. From hoopty's to nice it's a high risk.

All these suggestions are agreeable, but I see no decent cars at $10k or less. You may find a high mileage S2000? For sure no Evo, Type R, or FD unless you either get a beater or very lucky. I hate to say it, but there is a reason Subarus are getting popular. You can find a bug eye for a very reasonable cost. Your modification budget is enough to basically turn it into an Sti.
If I had $20k and didn't want a car payment, I'd do an '06 Evo, hands down, for all the reasons mentioned above. Solid cars, respond to mods like crazy, and fun as hell even when stock.
I personally wouldn't mind the $100/mo payment, I'd put that $20k down on an FRS.

A guy I spoke to says he's getting 30-35 mpg with his FRS. Amazing for a boxer engine.

I'm sorry I didn't make it clear Jason. The remaining 10,000 will go into the difference of the other 10,000 for the car. The rest will be used on mods.
